Artist family: Aunt Stella

Read time 2 minutes

Artistic talent has always flowed through the veins of my family, creating a rich legacy that has inspired me throughout my life. From drawing and painting to photography, the creative spirit runs deep in my lineage. While many of my relatives dabbled in artistic practices, only a select few had chosen to make it their professional career. However, the love for art has always been a constant in our family, and has left a lasting impression on me fueling my own passion.

I hope to honor her memory and share the beauty of art with the world.

One of the most notable figures in my family’s artistic history is my Aunt, Stephania Havaraniak, affectionately known as “Stella.” She was a remarkable talent, with a deep connection to her artistic expression. Stella’s art was often seen as a beautiful escape—a source of joy and peace. She worked primarily in pen and ink, creating intricate, detailed designs, and oil painting, where her brushstrokes captured life in a way words never could. Her creativity knew no bounds, yet she never pursued a formal career in art, instead chose to nurture it as a cherished hobby. For her, art was about personal fulfillment and expression, not the pressures of the professional world.

Sadly, most of Stella’s artistic works have not survived the passage of time. Many of her pieces were lost, and only a handful remain, precious memories and emotions captured through her eyes. I feel incredibly fortunate to have inherited a few of her artworks—those that she held closest to her heart, and that hung proudly on her walls. These pieces are more than just artwork; they are the essence of Stella’s spirit and the artistry she shared with the world. In addition to the paintings and sketches, I was also fortunate to inherit her wooden paint box, a set of oil paints, and a collection of brushes—tools that held the power to create something truly magical.

As I look at these treasures from my Aunt, I am reminded of the deep-rooted artistic heritage that runs through my family. They are not just relics of the past but a source of inspiration and push me to continue the artistic journey she started. I carry her legacy with me, using her tools and her influence to inspire my own creative pursuits. I hope to honor her memory and share the beauty of art with the world.
